Delivery & Package Scams
Overview
Fraudulent SMS text messages (often called "smishing") claiming a package is on hold because of an incorrect zip code, missing address, or unpaid customs fee. The message contains a link pointing to a look-alike tracking portal.
Critical Warning Signs
- Links pointing to random non-government domains (e.g. usps-tracking-update-info.com).
- Requests to pay small fees ($1.50 - $3.00) using credit card details on unverified pages.
- Urgent wording claiming the package will be returned to sender within 24 hours.
Defense & Prevention
Never click tracking links inside unexpected text alerts. Go directly to the official logistics provider portal (USPS.com, FedEx.com) to search your tracking number. Note that official agencies do not request fees via SMS.
